Product and Book Reviews by Marine Corps Nomads
It’s monsoon season in the desert where we go from super dry to crazy storms. The dry desert air takes a toll on our hair. The humidity of monsoon season makes our hair go a little crazy. Having the right hair care products can make all the difference in the world when it comes to making our long hair manageable. My daughter and I were happy to get the opportunity to try out the Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner from Desert Essence.
About Desert Essence:
Desert Essence was founded in 1978. The inspiration for their line of products come from the desert. The desert is “a model of pristine balance and sustainability, where limited resources if used responsibly, offer the body and spirit untold benefits.” They use ingredients that are known to be good for the body. Desert Essence knows the importance of not only taking care of our bodies but also the planet.
Living in the desert for almost 10 years now, I understand the importance of properly utilizing our precious resources. If we take care of the land, it can help take care of us. I like that the company sees this and utilizes practices that follow this line of thinking – especially given the name that they chose for the company.
During most of the year, both my daughter and I battle with the results of living in the harsh desert environment. The dry air and harsh sun take a toll on our hair if we’re not careful.
About Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner:
The anti-breakage shampoo is infused with a blend of Country Life Maxi-Hair plus Biotin which has Keratin and Pro-Vitamin B5. It also has Jojoba and coconut oils, aloe, saw palmetto, botanical oils, and radish seed extract. The combination of these ingredients reduces breakage up to 61% while smoothing and fortifying hair cuticles, revitalizing hair strands, and providing shine. The aloe and shea butter in the anti-breakage shampoo helps detangle and condition hair.
So what did my daughter think of the anti-breakage shampoo and conditioner?
Unfortunately, she wasn’t a big fan of the smell. (Keep in mind that she’s really sensitive to smells and scent is definitely a personal preference. It had a strong citrusy smell that my daughter really didn’t care for – especially since the smell lingered for some time after washing her hair.) My daughter has very thick, long hair. She found that she needed to use almost 5 times more shampoo that was recommended by the instructions and about twice as much conditioner. She had a little frizzing (not as much as with other shampoo/conditioners) after washing. She did experience some dulling of her natural blonde hair color. It takes some time to see the benefits of the anti-breakage shampoo/conditioner.
While the anti-breakage shampoo and conditioner wasn’t her favorite, she did fall in love with another line from Desert Essence – the smoothing shampoo and conditioner. She has some serious fly-away hair that gets frizzy when washed. It gets even worse during times of humidity. Lately, she’s sporting soft, smooth hair. It still dulls her hair a little, but she says it’s totally worth it.
